In today’s age of ever-evolving technology, it was only a matter of time before our methods of consuming media began to shift to favor a world of constant connectivity. Therefore it should come as no surprise to anyone that online streaming has taken hold the way it has. Never before has so much entertainment been available at your fingertips, in some cases literally. Paid services such as Netflix helped to spear the medium into the mainstream, but since the beginning, there have always been free services (check out gostream for example) that offer essentially the same exact shows and movies. With these services available to the disposal of the general public, it warrants asking, are paid streaming services still worth it?
In truth, the answer depends entirely on the person in question. For many, the main draw of paid services is the exclusive content they offer. Many platforms, such as Netflix, have really turned things on their heads in recent years by creating and distributing their own, high-quality original shows and movies. Many of these shows are critically acclaimed and have garnered cult followings since their launch, some almost instantaneously.
Of course, this goes both ways, as many times free services will end up getting this content anyway, albeit often at a slightly later date. To some this might not matter, however, some people may want instant access to the original programming these services offer, and as such it may be worth paying just for the convenience of not having to wait.
Constantly Updating Libraries of Entertainment
Another factor to consider is the library of programming offered by each. Both paid and free streaming services typically boast an ever-expanding library of entertainment, however, there may be some differences in their approach to this. One of the main complaints about services such as Netflix is they will often remove much-beloved shows and movies, often before fans have a chance to finish them. While this does have it’s upsides, it still may be an annoyance to some. In most cases, if programming is removed, it is to make room for new titles, but if you can foresee this being an issue for you, perhaps a free service would be better tailored for your needs. These services often have a more static and permanent library, simply adding additional programming as it becomes available. While this is certainly a convenience, it too comes with downsides, as many of these services just don’t have as wide of a variety of programming available. Many stick to the most popular shows today, or the newest episodes of current shows, while many older shows are left to the wayside.
There are many factors to consider before deciding to pay for a streaming service, and these are just a few. For many, paying the subscription fee for these services is a worthwhile investment, while many others would be just as content using a free service to fit their entertainment needs. Whatever the case may be for you, there is a wide world of entertainment to get out their and enjoy, whatever your decision is.
